16 Feb 2008
day 1 - Singapore-Taoyuan airport-Jiantan 剑潭 -Shilin 士林
day started like any other saturda
wake up, have breakfast, come home and mummy "forced' me to mop floor -_-
then, head down to airport

FINALLY! going to TAIWAN!! WOOHOO!!

And (although everyone tells me it's really no big deal, i still wanna say it)
we were departing from Terminal 3 - first time in the newly opened terminal, must take pics la!

mummy keeps saying she is a backpacker....

although she is only 'backpacking' 1 out of 4 backpacks -_-
anyway, i think terminal 3 is beautiful. i like how they used alot of natural lighting.
and the huge open space as the check-in counters makes the place less claustrophoic..
Changi Airport never fail to impress me :D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4h10mins later
we arrived in Taoyuan International Airport
somehow forgot to take pics of the airport...except these ones
taiwan is alot 'greener' and 'green'-conscious
after SARS, hand-washing is of vital importance in Taiwan: even social handwash has a standard 5-steps
took the skytrain to fetch Dinnie from terminal 1
unfortunately YQ and i were not very used to the system
(or rather, we've never been on it before)
so we tried to get off the sky train on the wrong side
only to be corrected by an airport personell (though he said it rather gruffly)
and that was our first moment of silliness on this trip
(completed with a bout of giggles from both of us -_-)
met up with Dinnie
then onto the airport bus to go to Taipei 台北
the airport bus was nothing great, but got very strong petrol/diesel smell
along the way we saw alot of 槟榔 stalls, but no 西施.
probably cos it's kinda cold so they are hiding inside the shop *shrug*
then we changed to taking the MRT
Taipei MRT single-trip tickets is alot 'groovier' than sg. u tap to enter, then slot the token into the machine on exit :D
mummy looks excited about taking the MRT
happy singaporeans/malaysians taking their 1st ride on the taipei MRT
it was a 10min walk from MRT station our accoms
accoms#1 in jiantan 剑潭. there're actually 6 beds in this room
******************************************
after a very brief rest, we head down to shilin 士林 for our dinner/supper
shilin is this famous place/nightmarket with lotsa good taiwanese food
臭豆腐,蚵仔煎,大肠包小肠,蚵仔面线,七里香,管材板,超大鸡排 etc etc etc etc
mummy waiting for our orders: 七里香,大肠包小肠
each stall sells many different things, but there are a few which only specialises in a few dishes
if i'm not wrong,
shilin used to be a huge open-air nightmarket with food and many other stalls, including games, clothes accessories, pets etc etc etc etc
game stalls: pretty much the same kind in the funfairs in sg
one of the 'etc': ear candling...or should i say, mass ear-candling
but for certain reasons (i guess hygiene being one of them), most of the food stalls are now housed in a building
food galore! come here with an empty stomach!
so, for food, we head to the sheltered one
but the smell of 臭豆腐 trapped in a building, mixing with smells of other food...
that kinda killed my appetite a little bit (just a teeny weensy bit)
some other stalls continue to be open-air, combined with sheltered stalls (e.g. pet shops)
SO CUTE! there's a indoor 'street' where pet shops congregate, selling all kinds of pets. Dogs being the most popular, and for this year, hamsters too!
but there are still some yummy food stalls in the open-air part too...
cut fresh fruits: fresh probably cos it's winter/spring. come summer, i am not too sure about the freshness...and flies...
from their looks, i guess u can safely say the fruist were indeed fresh
BUT, no matter sheltered or open-air, it's SUPER CROWDED on a weekend
feels like Chinatown during CNY...minus the heat and humidity
we squeezed our way in, got stuck somewhere in between, and came out empty handed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
after filling our stomachs,

i went with a very empty stomach

and getting squeezed left, right and center in the crowd
we went back to our accoms, tired and stomachs satisfied :D
and everyone pretty much konked out after showering...
i'm not sure how many of us had sweet dreams that night...
i sure did...despite the cold and lack of heating....
little did i know what would be installed for us the next day........

to be continued
back from taiwan :(
back to reality :(
and back to a very hot and humid environment which my body is strongly objecting with :"(

i'm sick...AGAIN!
bleah
then again, i've not been fully well since my first MC in jan...
so, i guess it's my baseline level to be sick....

supposed to put up photos for the taiwan trip..
on AL today, so it's a goood time to do it
cos it'll probably take me hours to finish a photo-blog
but i am still fighting the drowsiness and gonggong-ness from yesterday's Clarinase
(which obviously stated on its box that it's non-sedating!)
so, photo-blog another time.

but perhaps, just one of my fav pic from my collection

十分大瀑布
beautiful eh? i've got more to show...
just..let me get over this drowsiness...
so that i can sit in front of the comp for hours without falling asleep...
*yawn*
blogging from a coin operated internet comp (which has pretty fast connection :D)
in a place called jiantan, in taipei
i have 1 min left on the clock
so cannot say much

just i'm so happy!! muahahahaha
it's cold and it's fun...
and i'm sleep deprived, yet feeling energetic
no work is GOOOOOOOD!
Happy CNY! 恭喜恭喜!

day 2 of CNY, and i am at home...
spoiling myself with a packet of cold green tea
(which i am going to pay a price for later...)

and occasional bites of kueh bangkit.
it's CNY, and if i am going to cough blood out, i don't care.

i want my GOODIES!

so far, i've managed to curb the temptation to open the bah kwa bottle...
though i admit i sneaked 2 prawn rolls into my mouth last night..
it's such a torture to see all these goodies,
and my FAVOURITE goodies...
right in front of me..

argh!

CNY day one went fairly smoothly despite my coughing fits...

i so do not look like that now : (

though i am feeling so drained now..
sigh...

only time of the year there will be so many pairs of shoes outside my door

then again, day one is usually the more 'exciting' day

mahjong is a must during CNY in my family :D

when relatives whom i haven't seen for 1 year

mahjong addicts play anywhere, even on an oval-shaped table

gets together in 1 place and ask the typical questions.

who said mahjong is a game for 4 only? :P

a common conversation...

concerned relative (CR): Happy new year! *reaches hand ou
me (M): Happy new year! *shakes hand, plaster on smile*
CR:Are you still at (insert wrong hospital name)?
M: i'm at TTSH *continues plastered smile*
CR: oh yah oh yah *smiles* busy or not/tiring or not/how long you worked there for already?
M: ok lah/physically tiring/2 years *plastered smile starting to crack*
CR: wah! so fast hor! all of you grown up liaoz *laughs*
M:....... *repairing cracks in plastered smile*
CR: eh, you are a ......something-pist or doctor huh?
M: physiotherapist
CR: ooohhhh......*smiles uncertainly*..what do you do?
M: exercises, make patients move so they don't become weaker from lying in bed
CR: ooooooohhh....*awkward silence*..........eh, have you tried the bahkwa/prawnrolls/pineapple tarts....? very nice leh *walks away to get food*
M: *breathes deeply and sigh*

imagine that conversation in english, mandarin, hokkien and combination of all three languages *trembles in fear*

oh, another conversation with the more elderly/senior relative

Gretel (G): 新年快乐!
senior relative (SR): 诗音啊!新年快乐!! 哇!这么大了!! *grabs onto my arm, looks intently at my face* 越来越美了嘞!
G: *smiles awkwardly* 没有啦,一样啦。
SR: 有!有!有“朋友”吗? (SR tends to refer 'boyfriend' as 朋友)
G: *continues awkward smile* 没有嘞....
SR: 哎哟, 这么美,很容易找的啦。
G: ........ 随缘啦. (mumble beneath breath: you said the same thing last year...)
SR: 你哥哥嘞?要结婚了没有? *turns around to look for my bro*
G: *quickly walks away*

so, can you blame me for not looking forward to the 拜年 part of CNY?
previously, i used to love to 拜年.
got food, got ang pow, got other cousins to play with.
what's not to like?

but now...
the questions are enough to tempt me to stay home and watch tv/youtube
even getting angpows is being frowned upon by mummy dearest...
she feels that i am too old to get angpows -_-

and this year, i don't even have the FOOD to look forward to...
*bleah*

the "Guay" family reunion

but i am enjoying the break from work..
to be able to wake up to a bright blue sky, not pre-dawn darkness...
and to be able to sit here and just be myself...
in my PJS, listening to YES933 and not have to worry about meeting stats

life is good...in a way...

looking forward to taiwan next sat
NEXT SAT!!??
goodness...
only got one more week to get stuff ready...

*yawn* *stretch*
ahhh..
back to youtube...
and maybe.....just a couple more sneaked kueh bangkit :D
每条大街小巷,每个人的嘴里,
见面第一句话,就是恭喜恭喜。

yes yes, it's that time of the year,
when everyone clamours to get red&gold stuff to decorate,
when bah kwa prices rockets up,
when all the dirt and dust disappears at the price of sore muscles...

人人都爱迎春花儿开,迎春花儿人人爱。
迎春花呀,处处开呀,幸呀幸福来。

the time when all things chee-na gets displayed,
when shops stops playing billboard or hip hop,
when chinatown gets crammed with people,
when the yummiest snacks and food becomes widely available...

春联红,春联红,春联挂在那大门中,
迎新岁,贺新春,春联摇曳迎春风。

the time when if we are in a temperate country,
we celebrate the arrival of spring,
the start of a new year,
and even, get to play with firecrackers....

新年唱首新年歌,新年唱歌多快乐。
哥哥唱歌妹妹听,弟弟唱歌妹妹和,
新年唱首新年歌。

usually at this time of the year,
i will be looking forward to the ang pows,
the extended break from work,
and the loads of snacks and BAH KWA awaiting

正月初一头一天,家家户户过新年。
大街小巷街灯彩,炮竹响连天。

but this year..
is a sad sad year...
because the most important thing about this festive season
THE FOOD!
is going to be missing for me.

why? WHY?
because i am S.I.C.K. again!!!!!
*SOB SOB SOB SOB*
coughing so much that i am losing my voice..
at its worse, i sound like a cross between donald duck and mickey mouse.
NOT pretty i tell u!
sighhhh....

so when i go around 拜年ing in the next couple of days,
i'll be stuck with drinking plain water...
and watching other ppl eat..
no prawn rolls, no kueh bangkit, no BAH KWA!!!
*SOB SOB SOB SOB*

why?! oh why?!!?
sssiiiigggghhhh....

i guess the only consolation i have,
is that at the end of this festive season,
i will gain less weight..
and may even LOSE some weight...
which then gives me reason to buy new clothes!
*snigger* *cough cough cough cough* *bleah*

oh welllll....

wishing everyone a smooth and prosperous new year!

愿大家,身体健康,万事如意!
